Hot Yoga gets a Cold Shower

posted Feb 5, 2011, 10:46 PM by Avadhoot Dandekar

There is a good news for all genuine Yoga seekers. India has completed documenting 1,300 'asanas' which will soon be uploaded on the country's Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), making them public knowledge. According to the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Union health ministry's department of Ayush, "once the database is up online, patent offices across the world will have a reference point to check on everytime a yoga guru claims patent on a particluar 'asana'." Around 250 of these 'asanas' have also been made into video clips with an expert performing them.

CSIR's Dr. V. P. Gupta, who created TKDL, told TOI, "All the 26 sequences which are part of Hot Yoga have been mentioned in Indian yoga books written thousands of years ago." This is really a very good step and kudos to the Indian Government. This will help in refraining or stopping the self-styled yoga gurus from claiming copyright to ancient 'asanas', like Bikram Choudhury's Hot Yoga - a set of 26 sequences practised in a heated room. This will also help stop the monkey business of copyrighting yoga 'asanas' which are ancient and does not belong to any one individual. I have always been saying that nobody can copyright Yoga. Yoga is everybody's birthright and nobody's copyright. Yoga is ancient and Yoga is Universal. It is a revealed knowledge. It is everybody's birthright and nobody's copyright. How can yoga 'asanas' be copyrighted? This is really ugly. How can the essence of this ancient art enhanced by making it hot or sexy? This is really a good step from the Indian Government. Now Yoga can be within everybody's reach.

CSIR's Dr. V. P. Gupta added, "However, we will not legally challenge Choudhury. By putting the information in the public domain, TKDL will be a one-stop reference point for patent offices across the world. Every time, somebody applies for a patent on yoga, the office can check which ancient Indian book first mentioned it and cancel the application." This whole work is a hard work of many. At least nine well known yoga institutions in India have helped with this documentation. Dr. Gupta said, "The data will be up online in the next two months. In the first phase, we have videographed 250 'asanas' - the most popular ones. Chances of misappropriation with them are higher. So if somebody wants to teach yoga, he does not have to fight copyright issues. He can just refer to the TKDL. At present, anybody teaching Hot Yoga's 26 postures has to pay Choudhury franchisee fee because he holds copyright on them." TKDL will have photos and explanation of the postures.

Dr. Gupta said, "A voice-over will also point out which text mentions the posture. The information will be available in several international languages. We have screened through several ancient books like Srimad Bhagwat Gita, Vyas Bhashya, Yogasava Vijana, Hatha Praditika, Gheranda Samhita, Shiva Samhita, Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and Sandra Satkarma to exactly document all known 'asanas' and yoga references." Till now, it is estimated that the US patent office alone has issued over 200 yoga-related copyrights. Experts say yoga has become a $225 billion market in the West. Americans supposedly spend about $3 billion a year on yoga classes. Yoga is a favorite among Hollywood stars like Oprah, Madonna, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Aniston, Cameron Diaz, Gwenyeth Paltrow, Jane Fonda, Tina Turner and Angelina Jolie. The TKDL, which has 30 million pages of information, has been created to prevent those living abroad from claiming patent for existing knowledge.

International Yoga Conference in Pune

posted Jan 16, 2011, 2:48 AM by Avadhoot Dandekar   [ updated Jan 16, 2011, 8:15 AM ]

International Yoga Conference took place in Pune city recently. World renowned Yogacharya B K S Iyengar was invited to inaugurate the event. While speaking to the media he said, "I started teaching Yoga in the Lady Ramabai Hall at Sir Parshurambhau (SP) College and other colleges in 1937 for a salary of Rs 8 per month. But after three years, I was asked to stop conducting classes as the colleges became hostile to the subject. But I am happy to inaugurate today’s international conference on Yoga at the same venue where I started off about 74 years ago". This is the reason why you left India. This country has long back forgotten the importance of Yoga and Meditation. They have just called you because you have now become an International Yoga Acharya. While stressing the importance of Yoga he said, "One of my students here was D B Deodhar. He used to perform Yoga before playing a cricket match. He went on to become one of the finest batsmen in Maharashtra". Probably this could be the reason that the Cricket Control Board of India has appointed an Australian Yoga expert to train the players.

While talking on the uniqueness of Yoga he said, "The human body is Universal. Everyone has lungs, legs, hands and other parts, and only the mind is individual. The mind plays multiple roles and asanas help to achieve a single state of mind. Yoga is not only for meditation". Probably this is where you are wrong Sir? The ultimate purpose of Yoga is meditation. Only Asanas will not help. Yoga is not only physical but mental, psychological and spiritual. How the single state of the mind as you said above is possible without meditation? The whole purpose of Asanas is that the person is now ready to sit down silently so that he can watch his breathing, thoughts and emotions. And in the process be a pure witness. Does that mean that the thoughts and emotions will evaporate? Then he will become only a Robot. That is why in the economy and business it is expected that we need more robots. So that there is less problem for the HR people to handle their mental, emotional and psychological problems. So that the robot can be given orders and commands and it will not even think twice but just execute the orders with more accuracy and precision. They can give more productivity than the human beings of flesh and blood. No more HR problems. No pay hike, no increment, no promotion, no sick leave, etc. The Boss is very happy because the robot is obeying all the orders without any hang ups. He is also very happy because his ego is satisfied. But the problem is that we still need far more intelligent people to create robots and take care of them. Robot has not created a man. But a man has created a robot. Man and his intelligence precedes the intelligence of the robot. And the intelligence of God or existence precedes the intelligence of man. How the single state of mind as you said above is possible without going through the process of meditation? Monkeys do better postures than human beings. Does that mean they are Yogis? Body is the beginning and Buddha-hood is the goal. Contemplation is the beginning and composure is the goal. Asanas is the beginning so that Dhyan becomes possible. Yama is the beginning and Samadhi is the goal. Single state of mind as you said above means the stillness of the mind. The oneness of the being. Movement of the body through the Asanas is the beginning and stillness of the being is the goal. Movement of the mind and thoughts is the beginning and cessation of thoughts, stillness of the mind or No-Mind is the goal. Movement of emotions and churning of the heart is the beginning and attainment of emotional health or emotional wellness is the goal. If Asanas is the only thing in Yoga then Ashtang Yoga has no meaning. The other limbs and the other stages of Yoga become meaningless. Can Asana possible without Yama? Can somebody just jump on to Asana directly? Then Yama will have no meaning. Then the whole order will have no meaning. Everything will become topsy-turvy. Everything will become a chaos and disorder. Rhythm, order and symphony will have no meaning. Patanjali himself and his Ashtang Yoga will become useless. And other Yogis, Buddhas will become meaningless. Yoga ultimately pours in us the music of life. It pours in us the love of life. In the process life will become love and love will become life.

He felt happy when he came to know that the subject of Yoga is now a degree course being offered by the University of Pune (UoP). This is really a good thing that now some Yogis and Yoga teachers will get some teaching opportunities in the University. Yoga and Mediation can become a big knowledge sharing community of yoga students and yoga teachers. Earlier during the function, UoP Vice Chancellor, R K Shevgaonkar said that after the proposal to start a degree programme in Yoga came to him, he faced a dilemma - under which faculty the course should be prepared. "It has physical and mental elements, but after studying related text, it was decided to include under the faculty of physical education", he said. How does it matter Sir? All categories are just arbitrary. All divisions are just arbitrary. The purpose of Yoga is to attain the indivisible. Scientists are not sure of their own science. They are now saying that all science that has been written so far is just childish. They wish to re-write it again from the very beginning. The ultimate goal of Yoga is Spiritual. In which category can we put this? If spirit is the whole set then we are just a sub-set. If the intelligence of the whole existence is one set then we and our intelligence is just a sub-set. If God or existence is a ocean then we are just a drop in that ocean. But there are few drops which have became far bigger than the ocean. This was a great miracle in their life. Their life became a benediction. But a very few drops. Their names can be counted on our fingers. Just a few drops here and there. Krisha, Jesus, Mohammad, Mahaveera, Patanjali, Goutam Buddha, Kabir, Nanak, Zarathustra, Lao Tzu and Osho are those few drops of that ocean who have dared to become far bigger than the ocean. There could be many Buddhas whose names could not be taken. This attainment was their ultimate realization. But all this has been possible to them only through Yoga and Meditation.

Debate over Yoga's Ownership

posted Nov 28, 2010, 8:21 PM by Avadhoot Dandekar   [ updated Jan 16, 2011, 8:12 AM by Avadhoot Dandekar ]

There is a strong debate going on over the branding and ownership of Yoga. The group of Indian-Americans has spurred a fierce debate by starting a campaign labeled, 'Take Back Yoga'. The group behind this campaign, Hindu American Foundation, has only suggested that people around the globe become more aware of Yoga's debt to the faith's ancient traditions that is Hinduism. Aseem Shukla, the foundation's co-founder says, "In a way our issue is that Yoga has thrived, but Hinduism has lost control of the brand". The New York Times quoted him as saying this. The very survival of the brand today is because nobody controls it and nobody owns it. Had it been copyrighted it would have died its own death long back. The only greatness of this ancient heritage is that it is Universal. Yoga can be a birthright but it can never be a copyright. Even in the Ancient India the whole credit does not go only to Sage Patanjali. Many sages have preached it, but much of the credit goes to him because he has almost made it into a Science, an inner science. I am against anything that is not scientific. The only difference I am making is that Yoga is an Inner Science, a subjective science. Religion is a subjective science and not an objective science for the simple reason that it cannot be produced in a lab. It can only be created in the inner lab of a human being. It can be felt and experienced. The human being himself has to become a lab. The very thinking of the founders of Yoga was that it should remain in everybody's reach. It should never be controlled. It should never be branded. Through Yoga a person may become a Yogi but that does not mean Yoga as a form belongs only to him. He does not become the owner. We cannot make Yoga as a product and create an organization that will market it and brand it. And it will have all the paraphernalia of salesmen and business development managers and accountants accounting for profit and loss account and balance sheet. This is ugly. But Yoga can become a methodology for the inner explosion of our Consciousness. And this experience can be shared with those interested to walk on that path. As an experience it can be shared. One may become a Yogi on the path. But that is totally a different phenomenon. That does not mean he becomes the owner and proprietor. In that sense Yoga is everybody's birthright and nobody's copyright. Yoga simply means becoming one with our own being and becoming one with the being of the whole Universe. My being is dissolved in the being of the whole creation. Now I am no more what is left out is that pure Universal Being. This is Non-duality and this is transcendence. So Yoga can become a trance. Samadhi means trance. The ultimate stage is trance. What is left out is a pure awareness and pure consciousness.

Just hypothetically think of this situation. Had Sage Patanjali copyrighted his path of Yoga and asked all the people on this path, the past, present and the future, just one penny from them for every form or Asana, what would have happened? The Patanjali Foundation would have become far bigger and greater than the Nobel Foundation and the Patanjali Prize would have become far bigger and prestigious than the Nobel Prize. Every chosen Yogi for the Patanjali Prize would have become a billionaire instantly. No. This was not the very aim of this beautiful art. It is an ancient heritage. It is an ancient art and science. It has to be preserved. The enthusiasts and seekers will preserve it in some way or the other. This ancient art has to become Universal without any proprietary tag and syntax. The very branding will make the art ugly and phony. Today it is a pastime of a very few who are courageous and risk-taking. But the good thing is that this community is growing very fast. The only beauty of this art is that it is growing and proliferating in all its forms. Today it is fast becoming Universal for the simple reason that it is a comprehensive methodology. It is whole and holy. It begins with our body and culminates in our Buddha-hood. Today Yoga and Zen are like a wild-fire. You cannot stop them. Just to avoid hyperbole and proprietary tags the Patanjali Sutras have been passed on through verbal tradition since time immemorial. Any art, the moment we bring in control it becomes an ugly thing. Do you know why the ancient Indian language Sanskrit has absolutely become extinct today? Why it has died its own death? The simple reason is that a few people wanted to make it proprietary. They wanted to make it as their own property. They wanted to make it their own brand and a monopoly. Prakrit is our natural language. Sanskrit is our designed language. It was designed by the Sages to capture every experience of the divine and still the same can be communicated through language and words to the best extent possible to those interested. But this is only to the best extent possible. No divine experience can be communicated through any language or text. But it can only take to the closest. A thirsty can be taken to the well of the divine. But he has to drink the divine on his own. It can only be a pointer. It is just like pointing a finger towards a moon. All expressions and forms are only indicative of that formless which is always beyond. It will always remain beyond. One community called Brahmins of the ancient past has claimed that the Sankrit language belongs to them and only they are the custodians and preservers. They wanted to have a monopoly and they wanted to control. Look at the tragedy. What happened? The Sanskrit language almost becomes extinct. But see the consequences. All the Upanishads and other beautiful scriptures have been lost. The language belonged to the Upanishadic sages and Buddhas. The only objective was to convey the existential experience in the form of words to its most nearest. To convey it to the best extent possible so that it could become a triggering point in the mind and heart of a disciple on the path of Yoga.

The ultimate experience of a Yogi is that of Brahma. Brahma means an infinite awareness and consciousness. The experience is boundless and ever expanding. Beyond and beyond is its only journey. You ask the physicists and cosmologists, they say that the whole existence is ever expanding. It is not only ever expanding but it is ever accelerating. This truth can be experienced by a Yogi in his own inner being when he authentically moves on the path of Yoga and Meditation. And only such Yogi who has experienced Brahma can be truly called a Brahmin. The Upanishads say, “Aham Brahmasmi”. I can only be Brahma and I cannot be anything otherwise. This is the whole truth behind this discipline of Yoga. It is an awesome and beautiful art and science. It must be preserved and not controlled. It should remain everybody's birthright and nobody's copyright. Only this way it can grow and proliferate. This is what Osho has done through all his talks and discourses. All his 600 plus volumes of discourses and transcriptions indicate towards that One, eternal and Divine experience. This was the way of all the Buddhas. He was the recent most Buddha that the history in time has reckoned.

Now let us come back to Hinduism. All 'isms' are wrong. They are all tight water compartments. They are all slotted. Look at all the civilizations. They all settled on the banks of a river. For all settlers water was a basic necessity. It is even today. It becomes the very life source. So they all wanted to be near the water. And hence they all settled on the bank of the rivers. The ancient India too settled on the banks of a river called 'Indu'. The ancient Indians lived the life that is most natural. Their living was almost in tune with the nature. The nature of Nature was their nature. Their living was almost in tune and sync with nature. This was their way of living, almost natural. It was as if nature was flowing and flowering through them. They were moving with nature. They were nurturing nature. This was their Religion and this was their Dharma. The Sanskrit meaning of the word religion is Dharma. Dharma means the innate nature. Dharma means the nature of the Nature. Dharma means a way of the existence. Dharma means the very nature of the existence. Dharma means the very nature of the creation and creator. But they did not want to name it. They did not want to tag it. They did not want to philosophize it. They did not want to conceptualize it. Forget about branding. Branding is far and far away from it. But visitors from other part of the globe visited ancient India. They saw their way of living. When they went back to their own place they wanted to share their experiences. They had no other way but to give some name. They simply said Hindus that is those who are living on the bank of the river ‘Indu’. This word ‘Indu’ metamorphosed and became ‘Hindu’. The same word ‘Hindu’ and ‘Indu’ is now known as ‘Indian’. Today that ancient Hindu nation is called India. The people who lived in this continent were called Hindus and their religion Hinduism. This was the true meaning of Hinduism. But that original meaning has been lost over a period of time. This is the tragedy of change. Sometimes the true meaning is lost. Today it is bracketed. It is a tight-water compartment. Today it is slotted. But whatever may be the case the original meaning must be understood and preserved. This is the true meaning of Hinduism and the Hindu spirit. Today every Indian wants to be known as a Global Indian but with the same original spirit as a Hindu. Yoga means union and not division. ‘Hindu Religion’ simply means an Universal order but not as a cast or creed or sect. Hindus means the ancient civilization of India that knew the order of the Universe. They experienced and knew the ultimate law of the Universe. That order they called Religion. That is the reason every Indian today simply wants to be called himself an Indian but a Global Indian. But he wants to preserve his ancient heritage in the form of Yoga and Upanishads for the future benefit of the mankind. This he wants to preserve without any branding. That is the reason the ancient scriptures like Vedas and Upanishads have no authors. They did not believe in these ugly things like copyright, branding, etc. That is the reason why they are called revealed knowledge.

The social scientists are saying that many old languages die and many new languages are born. Look at the world of computers and information technology. Many new languages are born and many old languages become irrelevant. If we go into the research we will come to know that a language dies if it is made a copyright or propriety. It dies its death if it is controlled and branded. This is how Java and .Net may die in its current form slowly if it is not made open. The whole world of computers and Information Technology is becoming open source. An open language will be a defacto language of the future computing. Computer scientists are talking about writing the web from the very scratch because of the gap between syntax and semantics. If I say Bank to a computer in one part of the globe the other computer in the other part of the globe should give the same meaning. We do not know today whether it means a bank of a river or a financial institution. The syntax and semantics should mean the same then only it will have some meaning. Take another example. I tell a computer with this syntax: "I love you". I can write this in two ways. One is in pure text that is what is written here before. Secondly I can use a heart symbol in between the two words ‘I’ and ‘You’. Now we do not know what the computer will read. It can either say I love you or I hurt you. Both these possibilities exist. If the future computers are to be used for a higher purpose the syntax and semantics have to undergo change. This is the reason why the computer scientists are proposing of writing the computers from the very scratch. This was the reason of the Upanishadic sages in designing a language called Sanskrit. It was designed in text to convey the inner divine and existential experience in words and texts to its most nearest. Now English is a simple and widely spoken language. It is fast becoming a global language. Apart from having a native and a national language we need to have a global language. It must be a common global platform of communication for the entire world. The net has to be made neutral. It cannot be made proprietary. The Sanskrit language may again come back with full force. Nothing can be said. According to the computer scientists the most suitable language for the computers is Sanskrit. This possibility will always remain. Let there be a healthy discussion in everything.

Let Yoga be dynamic. Let it flow and grow. The very meaning of Yoga is union and not division. Let us not divide it between mine and yours. Let it become Universal. The very meaning of Yoga is union with the Divine. Yoga means the realization of the Atma (Soul) in the physical body and becoming one with the Universal soul or Supreme soul called Paramatma. Let it remain Individual and Indivisible. Let it not become personal and proprietary. Then only it will grow and proliferate. Moreover, what is the purpose? The purpose is that it should help the whole of humanity. Let it bring the Global Community under one common platform for higher evolution of the Consciousness. Let me share with you one more secret of Yoga. If you ask me, everything in the existence is undergoing Yoga, whether it is matter or non-matter, living or non-living. Yoga means movement. Yoga means change. Yoga means mutation. Yoga means transformation. It can be done knowingly or unknowingly. It can be done consciously or unconsciously. All the movements that are happening in us or in existence are a form of Yoga. When we do it consciously we call it Yoga and when we don't do it consciously we don't give it that name. That’s all. But from the side of the existence that Yoga is happening. The whole purpose of existence is to bring the yang and yin energies together. The whole intention of existence is to bring the Shiva and Shakti energies together. The whole aim of existence is to bring the Sun and Moon energies together. The whole objective of Yoga is to bring the ‘He’ and ‘She’ energies together. The ultimate objective of existence is to bring the Active and Passive energies together. All movement is towards this goal. And the balance is the union and is transcendental. But when we do it consciously it is more meaningful. So in all our movements we are undergoing Yoga. This is the Universal change that is happening. Yoga cannot be made proprietary by making it Hot or Sexy. All Power is for Prayer. All energy is for transformation. All energy is potential. All energy is in a state of flux. It is in a state of Kunda that is coiled and potential. All seeds are potential. You ask a quantum physicist he will say that all photons in the existence are potential photons. All labels are libelous when it comes to the true nature of Yoga. Let whatever be the adjective before any form of Yoga, the essence of Yoga cannot be diluted. The essence or fragrance will have to be preserved eternally. It will remain eternal without any doubt. There are many seeds and they will all flower. There can be many gardens to sow these seeds and help them flower. All photons and all the strings in the existence are potential photons and potential strings and moving towards their ultimate destination that is the inner flowering of their consciousness. I am convinced that the seed of Yoga is imperishable and immortal. Yoga is immortal and deathless. Let Yoga remain Universal and Divine.

Krishna, His Flute and Ashtang Yoga

posted Sep 18, 2010, 11:25 PM by Avadhoot Dandekar   [ updated Sep 19, 2010, 3:06 AM ]

Krishna and His flute have a great relevance to Ashtang Yoga. Krishna's flute is also a great metaphor of Ashtang Yoga. Krishna himself was a great yogi, a perfect yogi. He was a true Raj Yogi. Krishna himself says that there are eight doors to our body through which He comes and goes. The whole purpose of Ashtang Yoga is to bring that understanding to these eight doors so that the whole body becomes an instrument for the free flow of pure consciousness so that our own body becomes an instrument of divine melody.

Similarly, Krishna's flute has eight holes through which the air flows. There is a science for the flowing and blowing of this air through the flute. All flutists know this science and this secret of the free flow of air. There is also a complete science in the making of a flute. The size of the wholes. The distance between the wholes. The passage of air that passes through all these holes. The kind of bamboo. The burning of the bamboo. Is the flute bamboo straight or having a bend. All these matter a lot in the making of good flute. When the flute is good and when the flute player is good, the creation of a divine melody is easily possible. This is the reason why Krishna himself was a great flute player. This is the reason why his flute melody was enchanting and enlightening. This is the reason why people were mad for listening to his flute melody. He was really a wonderful person. There is also a great science in the free flow of the passage of air throughout the flute. Sometimes there are situations when the air blown inside the flute is obstructed. That is the reason all the flute players keep the flute clean. We all know that even air blocks are possible. The blockage of air can also be because of dust particles. All flutists use fine cloth and oil to clean the flute completely so that no air blockage is possible. This process helps them to keep their flutes clean and free of all air blockages. This is how great melody is possible. All great flute players know this secret. If the same understanding is extended spiritually the same secret can become the secret of all secrets.

Just imagine the case of our human body. There are eight doors to our body. There are eight layers. There are eight stages to pass through. These can become eight steps to the ultimate goal. These are: (1) Physical body, (2) Mind, the mental or intellectual body, (3) Thought body, (4) Heart or emotional body, (5) Feelings, the feeling body, (6) No-Mind or New Mind, (7) Silence or silent body and (8) Nirvana or Nirvanic body. Through these eight doors the divine comes and goes but we do not take note of. The whole purpose of Ashtang Yoga is to bring that understanding so that these eight layers or limbs become the doors to the divine. The whole process of Ashtang Yoga is to transform these bodies and attain to the bodiless body called the Nirvanic body. The purpose of all Hatha Yoga techniques is to make the physical body strong and agile and make it suitable for Pranayam and Meditation. The purpose of all pranayam or breathing techniques is to take the body above physical and make it ready and suitable for breathing. The whole purpose of meditation is to watch the body actions, to watch the thoughts and emotions, to watch the breathing and go beyond and transcendental. Becoming a pure witness and a pure consciousness is attaining to the Nirvanic Body.

Physicians have found now that the veins and arteries in our body which carry blood and oxygen can some time create a blockage. This blockage can be because of the accumulation of fats in the the arteries. Any obstruction in the free flow of oxygen and blood in the body results in ill-health. This blockage can be removed by removing the fat accumulation in the arteries. This can be the reason of ill-health on a physical level. Pranayam or breathing techniques can also help in regaining health in a big way. But on a spiritual level there can be other fats in our being which can become a great obstacle for the free flow of our consciousness. These fats can be ego, ignorance, lust, greed, anger, etc. Ashtang Yoga of Patanjali is a great science to overcome these barriers. That is the reason why Ashtang Yoga is a holistic and comprehensive science. Yoga helps in a great way in cleansing these blockages. Ill-health of our body can be because of these reasons, both physical and spiritual.

Forget about cleaning our body, mind and heart. Forget about cleaning the flute. I have heard that even a revolver and a rifle bore is occasionally cleaned by using a good gun oil for the free flow of the bullets. When we know that there is a need to clean the revolver, rifle and flute, why can't we think then that there can be such a need to clean our bodies? Ashtang Yoga is that technique to clean and cleanse or body so that our body can become a carrier of pure consciousness. This is the Nirvanic Body. This is the goal and purpose of Ashtang Yoga. This is the secret of Krishna's flute. This is the secret of Krishna's Raj Yoga. Let our body be a flute of that divine consciousness. Let that divinity be our melody. Let this be our ultimate goal. This is the 8th step of Ashtang Yoga.

The Perfect Yogi

We have all heard that a dog has got a sixth sense. But we all human beings though considered to be at a higher level of evolution are deprived of this sense. We all have only five senses. Normally, animals have got sixth sense because they are totally perfect as animals. They are very close to the nature. Whereas human beings are not perfect as human beings and they are much away from the nature. In the recent Tsunami the greatest damage has happened to us and our properties. The least damage has happened to the animals. Why? The reason was that the animals could perceive and foresee the changes in the nature. They could foresee the trouble. Because they are found to be very close to the nature. It seems they have that sixth sense by which they can know the changes happening in the nature. Because of this sixth sense the animals were able to go to the higher places and mountains before the Tsunami reached them. All the human understanding is only post facto. After everything has happened and not before. The reason is that we are not close to the nature. We have gone away from the nature. It seems we have gone berserk. The whole ecological imbalance is because of this. And we do not have that sixth sense by default. An animal is perfect as an animal. A dog is perfect as a dog. No change is required in their case. Yoga talks about attaining to the sixth sense by the human beings. Even Bhagwat Gita also talks about it. The Upanishads also say about it. But this sixth sense in human beings is possible only by design and the same is not available by default. This is a higher sense. Just think of these two words: dog-like or god-like. If you look into these two words there is not much a difference. All the alphabets in the two words are just the same. But just a little rearrangement makes a huge difference. Both the words have totally different meanings. Dog-like means having a sixth sense. But the sixth sense is by default. But the dog is not aware of the sixth sense. God-like also means that a person has now got a sixth sense. But this has been attained by design and not by default. God-like means that the man is now aware of the sixth sense. He is also aware of the greatest fact that it can be possible to anybody but only by design. It can be possible only by a conscious effort. God-like means that the person is now aware and conscious of the divinity pervading the whole creation. And this is every individual's birth right. Now the person is capable of having a different insight into the present and the future. So these are the two choices that a man can be either dog-like or god-like.

The scientists have also come to the same conclusion when they have completely explored the atomic and sub-atomic world that there is one force that keeps the whole atom intact. The force that keeps the whole atom unified. Without this force the whole atom could have been disintegrated. The stability of the atom is because of this force. The whole matter would have been disintegrated. The electrons would have collided with the protons and disintegrated. The electrons and protons could have collided with the nucleus and the whole atom and the whole matter as a consequence would have been disintegrated. There is something that keeps the whole atom in a stable condition. The scientists have called this force as a unifying force. But it seems as if these are available to the matter and the animals by default. This is a God given gift to them. This has been gifted to them by nature. But the same is not true for the human beings. That is the reason Yoga talks about the same sixth sense but by design. It is hidden and covered. It has to be uncovered. Bhagwat Gita says that this sixth sense is Sthitaprajna. It is a Sanskrit word. It means one who has become one with the whole. It means one who has attained to his self nature. It means one who has established in himself. It means one who is standing in his wisdom and order. It means one who is steady and calm. It means one who is capable of keeping equanimity in all situations. It means one whose equilibrium can no longer be disturbed by anything. It means one who has attained to his inner balance.

The whole path of yoga is an inner discovery. The whole science of yoga is a method to acquaint one with this mystery. Yoga is a great odyssey to this destination. This is our ultimate destiny. But it is by design and not by default. That is the reason why I am calling Yoga the science of inner engineering.

The hardware is the body and the software is the consciousness

In the world of computing the software has always been taking a lead and directing the changes to the hardware in order to shape up the whole information technology landscape. It is never the hardware that dictates but the software that maintains the leadership. All hardware changes are made as per the software changes and requirements. The same is the case when it comes to human evolution and civilization. The hardware is our human body and the software is our spirit or consciousness. It is the human intellect and intelligence that reshapes the landscape of human civilization. At the very depth of our being is the software called consciousness or the spirit. The level of our consciousness is the determinant or index of our civilization. It is as if God has downloaded the software called consciousness on our hardware called the human body. This software called consciousness works as an operating system of the human body. Our spirit or consciousness simply means our higher intellect and intelligence.

But this human software called consciousness is in the form of an executable. It appears as if it is proprietary and the intellectual property of God or existence. To know the mystery and miracle of this software, we have to decode it. But how to decode this software? How to make it open source? Making it open source means to know and understand every bit and byte of the human consciousness. The human consciousness is made up of every bit and byte called human thought. The power of our thought leads us to the discovery of our higher intelligence called human consciousness. The very objective of the Spiritual School is to decode this software and make it open source so that each one is capable of becoming a chief software architect of his own consciousness. Let us embark on that spiritual journey. Welcome to all those who are interested in this journey called the discovery of the higher intellect and intelligence. The objective of Yoga Spirit is to facilitate all interested individuals to understand the mystery and miracle of this software through the path of yoga and meditation.

Our inner state is unique and universal

It is just an illusion that we are all different and distinct entities. This is just the perception of our minds and not an universal truth. This differentiation or discrimination is part of our minds, but at the depth of our inner being we are all one, unique and universal. Just imagine and ponder on a small example. There are so many rivers, wells and ponds on the surface of the earth. They all look different on the surface of the earth. But at the end of their journey they all submerge into the same ocean and become one with the ocean. We can also look at the same thing with another perspective that at their depth lies only one ocean. Consider another example. When a ray of light passes through the prism the same ray of light appears in various bands of different wavelength. These bands are of different color and different wavelengths and appear as different and distinct bands. But this is only an optical illusion of the prism. Where as the ray of light that passes through the prism is only one. The phenomenon of a rainbow is also based on the same principle. Same is the case with all human beings. We all appear as different and distinct personalities. But this is only on the surface and periphery of our personality. Deep down our inner center is the same.

We are all the same individuals with the same soul. That is why the word individual is very very beautiful. The root of this word is the word whole or indivisible. Our consciousness can never be divisible. This perception that we are all different on the surface is just an optical illusion of our mind. When the ray of consciousness passes through the prism of our mind it gives an illusion that we are all different beings. This is just an illusion of our mind. The greatest reality is that we are all in fact one, unique and universal. This is our real identity. This is truly becoming an individual and indivisible. This is the inner experience of all the Buddhas. Even the result of the quantum physics is also the same. The experimental result and metaphysical experience of the quantum physicist is also the same that the whole cosmos is an interconnected oneness.
